The Singapore Medical Group (SMG) was incorporated in Singapore as a private company limited by shares on 10 March 2005. It was incorporated with the intention of being the holding company for the Group's various healthcare-related assets and businesses.
The Company went public on 15 July 2009 with our shares listed on Catalist of the Singapore Exchange Securities Trading Limited on 23 July 2009. The initial public offering of the Company was sponsored by PrimePartners Corporate Finance Pte Ltd.
The vision of the Group is to be a family name that is synonymous with excellent and affordable medical services. This model is not only unique, but is also readily adaptable and scalable to meet the varied and changing needs of society, across geographies. SMG aims to capture greater market share through first-mover advantage.
SMG is very excited about its businesses and believes that it has implemented a unique business model where the "branding" of the clinic prevails over "individual/personality-type" promotions. The Group also has a philosophy of developing into the "best and largest of its kind" in whatever medical discipline that it chooses to embark upon. This is achieved through management excellence by sourcing and retaining the best talents in the medical fraternity, and delivering high quality services to customers and patients. The most powerful form of advertisement is through personal referrals of satisfied customers, and this has been consistently achieved by SMG, with more than 65% of new customers having been personally recommended by someone they knew.
To scale greater heights, SMG is cognizant of the fact that acceleration of its growth can be realised through a number of ways, including investors with new business ideas and salient business affiliations. If you have the willingness to explore new growth avenues, or have unique knowledge and expertise, and are as excited as us in our business, we would love to hear from you.
In a short span of four years, we grew from one subsidiary to ten today. These subsidiaries are categorised into four medical clusters, namely the Eye Cluster, the Aesthetics Cluster, the Sports Cluster, and the Critical Illness Cluster. The purpose of categorising into medical clusters is to increase general management efficiency and effectiveness through more effective allocation of resources (such as intra-cluster training and marketing) and intra-cluster referrals.
The Lasik Surgery Clinic, the first operating entity of SMG, and the first clinic in the Eye Cluster, was registered as a wholly-owned business on 1 April 2005. Two months later, The Lasik Surgery Clinic commenced business on 3 June 2005 from a modest 800 sq ft clinic on the 20th floor of Paragon Medical. Sixteen months later, we moved to the 13th floor of Paragon Medical to occupy a clinic space of 7,000 sq ft to accommodate increasing patient load, an increase of 875% of clinic space in a short span of time. A year later in August 2007, The Lasik Surgery Clinic reached a milestone when it performed over 10,000 LASIK surgeries. Seven months after that on 2 April 2008, we extended the operations of the clinic to 365 days a year as we strive to provide patients with unparalleled service, including vision care and vision advancement services. For two consecutive years, namely 2008 and 2009, The Lasik Surgery Clinic was awarded The Highest Volume VISX Treatment Site in the World by Advanced Medical Optics, manufacturer of VISX and IntraLase lasers. In 2009, the Medical Director of The Lasik Surgery Clinic, was awarded The Highest Volume Exclusive VISX LASIK Surgeon in the World. To date, The Lasik Surgery Clinic recorded more than forty thousand LASIK surgeries performed. Our three resident Senior Eye Consultants easily rank number one, two and three in Singapore in terms of annual surgery volume, and our top Senior Eye Consultant has performed over 20,000 LASIK surgeries to date.
To cater to the downstream market consisting of patients who do not qualify for Lasik surgery at The Lasik Surgery Clinic, a second eye clinic, the Singapore Vision Centre, commenced business in 2007, offering general ophthalmology services, including cataract surgery, glaucoma and diabetic management. In 2009, building on the sterling track record of The Lasik Surgery Clinic, the Premium Lasik Surgery Clinic provides premium refractive surgery services targeted at patients who prefer additional ancillary services in the comforts of a 5-star environment. Complementing and strengthening the Eye Cluster, The Eye and Cornea Transplant Centre was established to provide cornea and stem cell transplants. Other treatments include the management of general eye diseases, cataract, cornea diseases, refractive surgery and presbyopia ("lao hua") correction.
We first branched into sports medicine with the establishment of the Singapore Sports Medicine Centre in 2006 at Paragon Medical through a contractual joint venture with Changi General Hospital, which allowed us to collaborate with the Changi Sports Medicine Centre. This joint venture provided us with the opportunity to position Singapore Sports Medicine Centre as a leader in private sports medicine practice in Singapore. The Singapore Sports Medicine Centre provides a comprehensive range of services such as injury prevention and management, physiotherapy and rehabilitation (including cardio-rehabilitation for patients recovering from stroke and physical rehabilitation for patients recovering from fractures and occupational injuries), sports nutrition as well as a successful weight management programme. It is also equipped with all necessary equipment, including a rehabilitative gym and fitness-testing and conditioning machines. Sixteen months later and bursting at its seams in Paragon Medical, SMG decided to relocate Singapore Sports Medicine to Novena Medical Center in 2008, occupying 8,000 sq ft of clinic space. Today we ranked number one in Singapore in terms of patient load. In 2009, to complement and expand the portfolio of sports-related healthcare services offered by the Sports Cluster, we established the Singapore Sports Orthopaedic Surgery Centre, to provide orthopaedic surgery.
Our Aesthetics Cluster offers a comprehensive range of healthcare services related to the improvement of physical appearances with three operating subsidiaries. Its first specialist clinic, The Dental Studio, established in 2007 at Paragon Medical, offers a full suite of dental services, including aesthetic dentistry such as teeth whitening, prosthodontics, orthodontics, and implant and gum surgery. The Dental Studio is fully digitalised and is equipped with technology and instrumentation including digital x-rays, intra-oral cameras, computer-controlled dental injection device, whitening equipment and ceramic restoration systems. The Singapore Aesthetic Centre, established in 2008, provides evidence-based aesthetic medicine services such as botox injections, skin rejuvenation using intense pulse light, chemical peeling and lasers. To provide additional services such as vaser-assisted liposuction and breast fillers procedures, the Singapore Lipo, Body & Face Centre was established in 2009. With the exception of The Dental Studio, our Aesthetics Cluster is located on the same floor at the Novena Medical Centre. This is to provide patients seeking aesthetics-related services with the convenience of easy and one-stop access to a wide range of such services.
We established the first clinic in our Critical Illness Cluster in 2008. The Cancer Centre was set up at Paragon Medical as a boutique-style outpatient cancer treatment centre occupying 2,100 sq ft of clinic space. The services provided relate to the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cancer and include chemotherapy, hormonal therapy, cancer screening and cancer genetic and risk assessment.
To date, SMG has over 21,000 sq ft of medical clinic space in Singapore alone.
SMG also has three affiliated eye clinics in the Philippines with a total of 21 affiliated practicing Ophthalmologists. Combined, these three clinics rank number one in the Philippines in terms of volume.
Placing medical quality and safety at the core of its corporate philosophy, SMG and two of its subsidiaries, The Lasik Surgery Clinic and Singapore Sports Medicine Centre, attained its ISO 9001:2000 accreditation in April 2007 from both the Swiss and U.S. accreditation bodies for quality management systems. In May 2009, SMG and all ten medical clinics were certified with the ISO 9001:2008 accreditations for quality management systems from both Swiss and U.S. bodies. This recognition of quality management from both Swiss and American ISO organisations provided the Group with an international standing along with the added motivation to maintain the very best in standards for our patients.
SMG has shown through its expansion that it is possible to burst open the dam of latent demand for medical services by engaging the latest medical technologies, the best equipment, the finest medical specialists, at an affordable price that reaches out to the population. This has been achieved over a short span of less than three years, by challenging mindsets and focusing on a vision that the best medical practices should be made available to as large a segment of the population as possible, and expeditiously with no compromise on quality and standards.
Before all else is the integrity of SMG. This underlies both the business model and philosophy that drives the business to grow continually, without sacrificing customer satisfaction, staff loyalty and relationships with business partners.
Thank you for your interest in SMG.
